Unless you know what to expect during the entire process, it might seem like you have no way of knowing whether or not you are getting the best price for your vehicle. It All Starts with the Appraisal

Whether you are going to sell us your luxury car, use it for a trade in, or sell it on the open market, everything should start by scheduling an appraisal. At no time should you trade your vehicle in or sell until you know exactly what it is worth. There are multiple steps in this process, including at least one that falls on you to perform before bringing your car in for evaluation. This involves taking a little time to research the current selling prices for used cars similar to yours. In doing this you at least have a reference point from which to start your negotiations.

The first step in the appraisal process is the quiet walk around, in which the appraiser will take his time walking around your luxury vehicle looking for scratches, dings, and dents. From here, the vehicle is taken into the service department for an in-depth inspection that covers every inch of your vehicle. Here the appraiser is looking for damage, wear and tear, and broken or missing parts.

While doing this, the appraisal technician will check over maintenance records, inspect fluids, operational condition of every feature, and then scan the VIN to check it with CarFax to see if there are any derogatory remarks. Along with this he will also be looking for any signs of wrinkled paint, misaligned carpets, wrench marks, leakages and several other "red flags" that can indicate damage, accidents, and anything else that can affect the appraised value of your luxury car.

Test Drives, Current Market Value

Following the appraisal inspection, the technician will take your vehicle for a test drive. During this time he will evaluate how your vehicle performs, any unusual noises, and any system that does not work as intended. Finally when all of this has been done, the appraiser will compare what he finds to current market prices for your type of car. He will also refer to the information in the Kelly Blue Book, considered to be the leading authority with regards to evaluating the resale price of used cars.

Finally the technician will tell your sales person what he has determined to be what is considered to be the Actual Cash Value (ACV). This is the amount you will be offered whether you are trading it in to us or want to sell it outright to us. It is also what you should expect to get if you decide to try and sell it on the open market or at least it should be. However, this is not always the case, as selling it yourself can often lead to lower prices.
